Who are you?
Throughout my life I have been exploring the truth about my emotional pains and the ways to eliminate those pains.
At the first stage of my exploration, I pursued spiritual enlightenment. At this stage, I benefited from Eastern mind-body-spirituality exercise – qi-gong. I also benefited from meditation and Jing-guan – a mindfulness practice. Consequently, through “turning my awareness inward”, I indeed transformed the pains in my life and gained some insights into my life.
At the second stage of my exploration, I learned about psychology and been trained in psychotherapy. As a result, I have obtained a MS in Psychology and a MA in counselling psychology. My personal mindfulness practice, with an emphasis on bodily sensations, particularly resonates with Eugene Gendlin’s Focusing and Peter Levine’s Somatic Experiencing, I also see mindfulness in psychodynamic approach, CBT, Gestalt therapy, and other Western schools of psychotherapy.
Now, as a Registered Psychotherapist, I am at the beginning of a new stage. At this third stage of my exploration, I will not explore alone, I will accompany you, my client, to explore your pains and help you to see the truth in your pains. I will feel your pains and may guide you to work through your pains. My therapy will draw heavily from my personal journey towards inner peace and self-knowledge. It will also integrate wisdom from Eastern spiritual traditions and practices from Western psychotherapy traditions. My psychotherapy could be delivered in English or Mandarin. Though I am open to working with people from different racial or cultural backgrounds, I feel most comfortable working with Asian clients, new immigrants and international students.
What’s on your therapist bookshelf at the moment?

This book impressed me by it’s fresh perspective. I have done a one-year autism program and I learned from this program about autism and the ABA treatment model which is said to be the only evidence-based treatment for Autism. Nobody bother to ask about autistics’ feelings and thoughts about this treatment. However, this book provided an autistic’s perspective about ABA treatment, disclosing that, rather than healing autism, ABA treatment may have only made autistics more compliant while their feelings and needs were not respected. The book further disclosed that many autistics may have been traumatized by this treatment.
The author also criticized the use of euphemism like calling autistic kids “kids with autism” for embedded non-acceptance of autism. Actually, the author said that you cannot separate someone from their autism, which is part of their identity.
I also liked the “Value-based Integration Process” that has been implemented throughout the book.

Recently I delved into the area of couples therapy, I began to read the predominant figures in this area: John Gottman, Terry Real and Sue Johnson. Gottman looked into the interactions between couples for the keys of happy marriages. He identified 7 principles for a happy marriage. While Gottman sees 4 horsemen as the enemies that destroy marriage, Terry Real sees individualism as the final culprit of most marital problems. From Terry’s view, couples should all develop a relational consciousness and overcome their individualistic mindset.
What inspired you to become a therapist?
About 20 years ago, when I was at the lowest point in my life, with the guidance of a mentor, I learned to “look inward” and “observing my thoughts and emotions”. Resultantly, my belief system and value system got melted down and rebuilt. This transformative experience lasted for several years. Since then, I began to be interested in psychology and did a master’s degree in Psychology in China. Originally, I was interested in developing a career in the area of academic research. However, when I was graduating from the program, it occurred to me that the best way to use my knowledge and help people is to be a counselor or psychotherapist. After so many years, I think what originally inspired my into this area are the transformation that I have experienced many years ago, the idea of “Know Thyself” and the realization – “change your inner world and the outside world will change accordingly”.
