Body-centered and mindfulness-based Psychotherapy

What is Sun Zhihai’s Jing-Guan?

Sun Zhihai’s Jing-Guan (hereinafter referred to as “Jing-Guan”), as the name implies, is a mindfulness procedure developed by Sun Zhihai, a Professor in China, along with a group of practitioners accepting his guidance.

The core of this practice may be summarized in three words – “feel your feelings”. “(to) feel” means to feel quietly with your body, and the “feelings” may refer to bodily sensations in your heart, in your brain, and in any other parts of your body. Although numerous people deal with their feelings in their meditation, mindfulness practice, or in their therapy sessions, Jing-Guan differ from them in subtle yet significant ways.

In general practice,“feel your feelings” sometimes works miracles, while at other times it doesn’t work so well, or even worse, it doesn’t seem to work at all when miracles are highly expected. In Jing-Guan, Dr. Sun found out that people may feel their feelings through either their body consciousness which usually works miracles, or brain/thinking consciousness which doesn’t work so well. Dr. Sun differentiated the two states of consciousness and developed his procedure accordingly so as to avoid pitfalls that may be caused by our brain/thinking consciousness and make our practice more efficient and more effective. This procedure so far has been proved successful among the practitioners.

Here is what this three-step procedure looks like:

In preparation, you need to find a quiet place free from disturbances. you may sit or lie down or use any other postures you feel comfortable with. Close your eyes. Relax your shoulders and relax your heart.

Step one is to feel the feelings in your heart. Feel your heart quietly until your heart becomes clear, quiet and comfortable.

Step two is to feel the feelings in your brain. Feel your brain quietly until your brain becomes clear, quiet and comfortable.

Step three is to view the thoughts that may arise in your brain. Quietly observe any thoughts that arise in your brain until there are no thoughts in your brain.

People may learn this procedure simply by following the audio/printed guidance. Once become proficient, the use of the three steps could be quite flexible and you may use any one of the 3 steps to transform your emotions so long as it works for you.

Besides efficiency and effectiveness as mentioned above, Jing-Guan doesn’t impose you a belief system. Further, you don’t even have to believe it to make it work for you. It’s effectiveness takes only you curiosity and practice. Nor does Jing-Guan require a lifestyle change or maintaining a certain mind state in your daily life, though your life may change for the better once this practice begins to take root in your life.

Jing-Guan is a newly developed mindfulness procedure and it is still developing. Since Dr. Sun started to conduct workshops in 2014, fundamental changes have been brought into participants’ life and into our universe. At the same time, new techniques under the three-step structure have been developed and proven effective among the practitioners.

Jing-Guan, as a way of emotion-management and/or spiritual alchemy, is an unprecedented group exploration, and you are invited to join this exploration.
